There are parts of you that hold the keys to you TRULY shining your magick in this world. These parts are called your golden shadows and in this post I share what they are, and how to do Golden Shadow work.
Your shadow aspects hold the keys to:
- Authentic decision-making
- Overcoming people-pleasing
- Embodying a deep sense of purpose
But… your shadow self is not limited to only traits considered ‘negative’ or ‘bad’, although that is what we have been conditioned to believe about shadows and shadow work.
What are Golden Shadows?
The golden shadows are the parts of ourselves that are rejected, repressed or suppressed because they appear to ‘outshine’ others or trigger feelings of low self-worth in others…
You read that right. It’s aspect we reject ourselves (or have been conditioned to reject) so we can be considered a ‘good’ person – ‘fit better’ into society you see…
Golden shadows usually form during childhood, when societal and familial conditioning has a huge impact on the developing child.
The golden shadow represents the bright, positive aspects of ourselves that we have repressed or fail to recognise. These qualities can include talents, natural gifts, strengths, virtues, and other admirable traits.
Often, we project these golden qualities onto others, admiring or even idolising people who display them, without realising that these same qualities reside within us.
Why do we repress our Golden Shadow?
Below are some of the reasons why we might hide our positive qualities:
- Societal Conditioning: From a young age, we receive messages about what’s acceptable or desirable. Sometimes, we learn to downplay our strengths to fit in or to avoid standing out.
- Fear of Responsibility: Embracing our talents and strengths can be daunting because it often comes with increased expectations and responsibilities.
- Low Self-Worth: If we have low self-esteem, we might struggle to see our positive traits or believe that we deserve to shine.
What ends up in the Golden Shadow box?
One of the saddest aspects that end up in the shadows is our CREATIVITY…
We have an endless supply of creative potential within us, it is our birthright! It’s wild, it’s unpredictable, it’s expressive, it is LOUD, it’s also colourful,
and it is f r e e !
And the reason why we are struggling is because this specific potential of ours is what will set us all free, and that is exactly why it’s one of the biggest parts to be suppressed and rejected by society…
I have my own personal story with regards to my creativity… and my journey back towards the expression of my creative potential is ongoing and it’s coming alive!
Other Golden Shadow aspects that are in this box:
- Confidence
- Assertiveness
- Compassion
- Intelligence
- Leadership abilities
- Emotional resiliency
- Adaptability
Rejected shadow parts are the key reason we do, or do not do, what is aligned with our inner wisdom.
And so we self-sabotage, to protect ourselves from the perceived threat of our own success…
How to do Golden Shadow work
- Identify Your Projections: Pay attention to the people you admire or envy. What qualities do they possess that you admire and/or envy? These qualities might be part of your golden shadow.
- Reflect on Compliments: Think about compliments you’ve received but brushed off. We have all done it… What strengths, gifts and talents are others seeing in you that you might not acknowledge?
- Inner Child Work: Reconnect with your childhood self. What did you LOVE to do as a child? What dreams, talents, or passions did you have that you’ve since forgotten or dismissed?
- Journaling: Write about times when you’ve felt proud of yourself. Explore these moments to uncover the strengths and virtues you demonstrated.
- Visualisation: Visualise yourself embodying the qualities you admire in others. Imagine scenarios where you fully express these traits.
Integrating your Golden Shadows
Once you’ve identified aspects of your golden shadow, it’s essential to integrate them into your daily life:
- Set Intentions: Intentionally incorporate your newly recognised strengths into your daily routines and interactions.
- Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself as you explore and integrate these traits. Self-growth can be challenging, and it’s okay to take small steps.
- Seek Support: Consider working with a mentor who can guide you through the process and provide valuable insights and encouragement for your journey.
