We live in a time that’s fast-moving, stimulation is all around us, and it’s noisy. Distractions are all over the place. Every moment is filled with notifications, updates, and message alerts – each one competing for our attention. This is the modern world and it thrives on distraction. Our society rewards it, our devices are built for it, and our nervous systems are exhausted by it.

In this kind of world, choosing simplicity is not just a lifestyle choice – it’s an act of quiet defiance and rebellion.

A while ago I removed myself from social media for a while – because I was overwhelmed and in a loop of constant comparison, feelings of inadequacy, and I craved quiet and stillness. I desired to remember my essence again, listen to my intuition and feel the joy of life again. This time off social media gave me so much perspective, and it did help me reconnect back to myself again. I started finding joy in simple moments, in quiet, and I started painting, drawing and sketching again – something I haven’t done for years. It has brought me closer to who I am and who I want to be.

What constant distractions do to us

Every time we shift our attention to a notification, an alert, a scroll on the social media feed, we fragment our energy.

Every time we compare ourselves, it’s a distraction from our own path, and it fragments our energy.

We scatter our focus and energy in so many ways, and with it, our inner peace, and our own voice. It’s subtle, we don’t realise at first this is what’s happening, but eventually we begin to experience a constant sense of overwhelm; a low-level form of anxiety that hums beneath the surface of our daily lives… And we feel lost.

Do you recognise this?

We have become so accustomed to this constant stimulation and comparison that stillness actually feels uncomfortable, that our truth feels daunting, even threatening at times.

Silence confronts us with ourselves – with our thoughts, our emotions, and our truth.

So what do we do? We scroll, we consume, we fill every pause. Yet, in doing so, we lose touch with the very essence of who we are: presence.

Even though it feels uncomfortable in the beginning – this stillness and silence, eventually it brings peace and calm, and you hear yourself again.

Simplicity is a radical return…

Simplicity is about making space for what truly matters. It’s the art of choosing depth over distraction, quality over quantity, essence over excess. Simplicity will reconnect you back to your intuition as well.

To simplify is to reclaim sovereignty over our attention – to take our own power back, to say no to the noise and yes to our own rhythm.

It is a conscious act of rebellion against a system that profits from our restlessness!

When we simplify our lives, we begin to hear again; our intuition, the whispers of our soul, our inner truth… We start to live again from our centre rather than being pulled in all the different directions. And I say again, because our beings, our bodies, our spirits haven’t forgotten this, it’s still alive within us, but we must return to it.

The power of stillness

Stillness is not the absence of movement – it’s the presence of awareness. It’s the fertile ground where clarity, creativity, and insight are born. Here is a post on the power of stillness I wrote a while ago.

In stillness, our mind settles, our body relaxes, and our souls speak…
And it is in this sacred space that we remember who we are…

Stillness reconnects us to the eternal now, this present moment – the only place where life truly happens and from which we can create.

Ways to bring simplicity and stillness into your life

  • Digital boundaries: Choose moments in your day where you disconnect completely. Let your mind breathe. Or have a digital detox for longer, like a few days or a week, or even a month or longer!

  • Intentional mornings: Begin your day without screens – journal, do morning pages, meditate, or simply sip a cup of tea or coffee in silence. Burn a candle and some incense for ambience!

  • One thing at a time: Multitasking can fragment your presence, so give your full attention to whatever is before you. I am someone who jumps around because of my Manifesting Generator aura and energy (learn what this means here), so I get this, but what I mean here is do all the things, but focus on what you’re currently doing, be present in the moment of what you’re busy doing.

  • Declutter your space: A clear space supports a clear mind. Simplify your surroundings to reflect inner calm. This one is very powerful, yet we forget how we can shift our energy by just clearing up our spaces.

  • Return to nature: The natural world teaches us simplicity and stillness effortlessly. Spend some time in Nature and allow this time to recalibrate your nervous system. It’s amazing what a walk, run or a swim in the river or sea can do to clear away the cobwebs and bring calm and balance.

  • Do something creative: Doodling, sketching, painting, crafting, singing, dancing, colouring… the list goes on; these are all forms of active meditations and every line or drop of paint brings a slow alchemy and healing within. Doing something creative reconnects us back to our innate creative life force energy.

The quiet revolution…

Simplicity and stillness are not passive states – they are powerful forms of resistance in a world that has gone mad in some ways… In a society that measures our worth by productivity and pace, choosing quiet, stillness and simplicity is revolutionary.

Each time we pause, breathe deeper, and return to the present moment, we call back our energy that got scattered by all the distractions.

And so we become part of a quiet revolution – a revolution that values being over doing, and awareness over distraction. We reconnect back to our essence. Simplicity is one of the essences of our being.

In a world that wants to keep us endlessly scrolling, endlessly striving, endlessly consuming – simplicity is our rebellion, and stillness is our freedom!
