If you have ever felt creatively blocked, and even resistant to creativity, anxious, or disconnected from your own voice and intuition, there’s a simple yet transformative tool that can change everything – Morning Pages.

A practise by Julia Cameron from her book ‘The Artist’s Way’ – this daily writing ritual has become a cornerstone practise for many artists, writers, entrepreneurs, and anyone seeking a more authentic connection with themselves and their truth.

I have been doing Morning Pages for a while now, and it has brought me an inner calm, creative ideas and flow – that I have been acting upon instead of resisting, and it has shifted stagnation within my energy field. I transformed some anxiety and fears that have been keeping me in a loop, and I have uncovered conditioning in my mind that are always present (that I didn’t even realise I was listening to), that were keeping me stagnant as well.

For years I told myself I don’t have the time to do something like this… I have small children, I am not a morning person, I can’t get up before everyone else, I’ll be too tired… yet when I committed to this sacred practise life transformed around me to support this. Now my days feel intentional and productive and at the end the day I fall asleep easily and satisfied. These are small things that have shifted for me, but with huge impact in my life.

What are Morning Pages?

Morning Pages are three longhand pages of stream-of-consciousness writing, done first thing in the morning.

The practise is simple: you sit down with a notebook and pen and write whatever comes to mind – no censoring, no editing, no worrying about grammar, spelling, or structure. It’s not meant to be ‘good writing’. In fact, it’s not meant to be writing at all in the traditional sense. It’s not meant to be read again or seen by anyone.

As Julia Cameron puts it, Morning Pages are ‘a form of meditation’ – a way of getting all the mental clutter, worries, random thoughts, and inner chatter out of your head and onto the page.

It’s a practise to clear the background thoughts and mind noise by actually writing them down – instead of them floating around you daily keeping you stuck, stagnant, in worry, resistant, unproductive etc…

Why are Morning Pages done in the morning?

Morning Pages are done first thing in the morning because that’s when your mind is most clear, unfiltered, and still very much connected to your subconscious.

Writing before the day’s distractions allows you to release lingering thoughts, dreams, and emotions, clearing mental clutter before your logical mind takes over, and your day starts.

In short: doing them in the morning helps you start your day with clarity, focus, and creative flow.

How Morning Pages work

The power of Morning Pages are in their consistency and honesty. And here’s how to do them:

1. Write by hand, first thing in the morning.

Before you check your phone or get pulled into the to-do lists of the day ahead, take your notebook and write three full pages by hand. This physical act of writing slows down your thoughts and deepens self-connection.

In fact, you can even write your to-do list for the day out if that’s part of the stream of consciousness thoughts… I sometimes do that during my Morning Pages and it helps a lot with creating a flowy, structured and productive day.

2. Don’t censor or edit.

Whatever comes up – even if it’s ‘I don’t know what to write’ or ‘I’m tired’ – write it down. The idea is to bypass your inner critic and allow your subconscious mind to speak freely.

This can be a difficult part if you’re someone who always edit themselves or are a pleaser… Ask me, I know. But it becomes easier and soon you will start to ‘hear the voices’ in your mind that are actually conditioned thought patterns that you’ve taken on somewhere in life and made your own.

3. Don’t read them again (at least not right away).

Morning Pages are private and not meant for review, especially in the beginning. They’re about process, not product. Reading them too soon can trigger judgement or self-analysis, which blocks the flow.

Early morning it’s still quite dark, and writing in low light just so I can see the paper and the lines, but not much else, is quite helpful. I also don’t think about what I’ve written down after I’ve done them.

4. Show up every day.

The magick of Morning Pages unfolds over time. The more you show up, the more your creative mind begins to trust you again – and reveal insights that were once buried beneath the noise. You will also begin to trust your intuition again.

Over time and by being consistent I’ve begun to see a pattern of ‘voices in my head’ (the conditioned thought patterns = the voices in my head). I’ve even named them: I have a Vicky Victim, a Moaner Lisa, a Worry Wendy…

But there are also a Wise Crone, a Motivator Mandy and a Positive Penny…

It is the consistency in doing Morning Pages that are showing me my patterns that are keeping me stuck and disconnected from my intuition and creative flow. And by just allowing them to be written down without judgement is already transforming them…

What are 5 benefits Morning Pages can bring you

1. Mental clarity and emotional release

Morning Pages act as a daily brain dump, clearing the fog of overthinking and emotional buildup. You start your day lighter, calmer, and more centred. That’s why it’s a form of meditation, but actually easier to do if you struggle to meditate to clear your mind…

2. Creative flow and inspiration

By unblocking your inner critic, you open the door to spontaneous creativity. I started getting bursts of ideas, problem-solving insights, intuitive nudges that served me greatly, and a renewed passion for my projects that felt stagnant. I even started some of these creative projects that have been lying waiting…!

3. Self-discovery and inner dialogue

Over time, Morning Pages reveal patterns, fears, and dreams. They help you understand your emotional landscape and inner world with greater honesty and compassion.

This is something that helped me a lot – receiving clarity into my inner world which at times feels chaotic.

4. Reduced anxiety and stress

Writing out your worries externalises them, you put them out of your mind unto paper, reducing their hold on your mind. It becomes a safe outlet for emotions, fears, feelings and anxieties, leading to a more peaceful nervous system and greater resilience throughout the day.

5. Empowerment and authenticity

The simple act of meeting yourself on your pages builds self-trust. You learn to listen to your intuition, honour your truth, and make decisions from clarity rather than confusion.

The real gift of Morning Pages

Morning Pages are more than a journaling habit – they’re a sacred daily ritual of self-connection. They clear space for your authentic voice and intuition to emerge and remind you that creativity isn’t something you force – it’s something you allow, it’s something that’s already there within you.

Over time, this simple practise transforms not just your creative flow, but your relationship with yourself, and the process of deconditioning ways that were never the real you.
