Meditation is a simple, accessible practise with powerful benefits for modern life. A regular meditation practice reduces stress, supports physical health, strengthens the brain, improves sleep and focus, boosts energy and creativity, deepens intuition, helps manage pain, and empowers you to access your own inner wisdom and healing capacity.
The 9 reasons to start a meditation practise, shared in this post, are just some of the many benefits of the power of meditation. My work here to de-stigmatise meditation and show you how easy it is to experience this practise that has been around for thousands of years, and what it can bring you.
So, why meditate?
Meditation is a medicine for the times we are in now, and it’s a tool that will greatly enhance your life, on all levels. Here are 9 reasons to start a meditation practise and experience the great benefits of it for your life.
1. To experience calm and inner peace.
Meditation has been proven to reduce stress (it reduces the production of cortisol – the stress hormone), and helps with relaxation. By reducing the stream of thoughts and mind clutter we experience daily, that may be causing stress, we can create a sense of calm and inner peace. This flows out to your life, and therefore you’ll experience a calmer and more peaceful life.
2. Good for the body
It improves the skin (if it lowers stress, it’ll also aid the skin – which can show all kinds of reactions to stress), reverse heart disease (lowers blood pressure), it helps with digestive problems, and boosts immunity.
3. Reduce pain, and the need for painkillers
Due to the thickening of the part of the brain that regulates pain, a regular meditation practice can help with the management of pain. It also encourages non-reactive awareness of pain sensations, which can change your perception of pain.
4. Strengthen the brain
Meditation increases grey matter in the brain and therefore reduces age-related deterioration. It boosts memory and also creativity. Meditation can help you tap into your creative potential.
5. Improve sleep quality
Regular meditation can improve sleep quality, and will help you fall asleep faster, stay asleep longer, and wake up feeling more refreshed. It helps calm your mind and prepares your body for restful sleep. Our brains need rest and we need to let go of the constant mind clutter running our lives. Sleep is a great time to do this, so improving the quality of our sleep will support this.
6. Boost your energy
A meditation, even a short quick one, re-energises your whole being and empowers you into remembering you are in control and don’t have to rush.
7. Improve attention and focus
A regular meditation practise enhances your ability to concentrate and stay focused. It greatly helps with clarity and trains your mind to resist distractions, becoming more present in the moment.
8. Heightened intuition
Meditation helps improve intuition, encourages self-reflection and self-awareness. By observing our thoughts, emotions and patterns without judgement, we gain insights into our own behaviour, reactions, and repeating patterns that are not serving us, and the ways to move through and out of them.
9. It empowers you
Meditation is a way to empower your own innate ability as a healer. Because of all the benefits listed above, you activate this ability within and gain clarity and solutions to your own life, which is the empowerment. We already have everything we need within, and meditation is a tool to access this inner wisdom.
